MUSIC MINISTER

ST. GEORGE’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH IN AUSTIN, TEXAS, IS SEARCHING FOR A PART-TIME MUSIC DIRECTOR TO FILL THE FOLLOWING ROLES:

  • As music minister, facilitate congregational participation in the music and foster the talents of parishioners who may wish to offer their gift of music on occasion (with guitar, recorder, solo voice, etc.).

  • As principal accompanist, play organ and piano as appropriate at worship services (including hymns, service music, prelude/postlude, and choral anthems). Arrange for and conduct instrumentalists at Christmas and Easter or other occasions. Be available for funerals and weddings. Arrange for organ and piano tuning and repair.

  • As choir director, prepare for and lead choir rehearsal one evening a week plus preparation prior to the Sunday service. Includes communication with choir members, fostering community and developing the talents of the members.

  • As music planner, select, prepare and rehearse congregational music, choral anthems, plus prelude and postlude for each Sunday or other major feast day or occasion celebrated at St. George’s (selections in consultation with Rector). Arrange for all copyright permissions for any copied music. Select and order new music within the budget allowed.

WE ARE LOOKING for someone with experience and/or training in choral conducting, who can play the organ and piano in an accomplished manner that facilitates congregational singing, conveys a sense of spirituality through the liturgical music, and gives the choir a wide range of anthems from which to sing. Creativity and the use of a variety of musical styles are encouraged. The music director should be able to work independently, be self-motivated, start and end all rehearsals on time and possess good interpersonal skills.  Familiarity with the Episcopal liturgy is desirable.

ST. GEORGE’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH is a vibrant, dedicated, and participatory congregation with an average Sunday attendance of 110, which sings and appreciates a variety of music.  We currently have a strong choir and an extensive choral collection. Instruments in the worship space include an 8-rank pipe organ and piano. Our principal hymn books are the Hymnal 1982 and Gather (2nd edition).
